Elders
The Arts Therapy Department
at Whittier (formerly The Boston Institute for Arts Therapy) has developed
expertise in motivating and assisting elders in a creative setting that
generates emotional growth and healthy, supportive engagement with peers.
The use of music, movement, art and drama brings elders into meaningful
connection with one another, often breaking the routines of isolation.
Replacing Isolation with
Inspiration
In many cases, elders are often
isolated during times when they experience wrenching changes. Some of
these changes include multiple loss of loved ones, change of residence,
depression, anxiety, agitation, and diminishing physical and mental capacity.
Arts Therapy brings a powerful and creative
approach to deal with these life changes. We join art, music, movement,
and drama activities with supportive guidance to foster a sense of purpose
and cope with loss.
Wellness Program
For elders in age-separated
housing complexes, this program helps reduce isolation, foster renewed
activity, build relationships and restore hope. With renewed meaning in
their lives, elders look forward to each day. The arts help elders explore
their past, communicate current problems and deal with traumatic changes
in their lives. Art activities and discussions are tailored to help each
group invoke emotional, cognitive and social capabilities. The Wellness
Program creates new alternatives and generates future aspirations. A community
outreach component connects elders with students from neighboring schools
where mentoring and participation in arts activities occur.
